Google Glitch Wipes Out 150,000 Gmail Accounts
Basically a glitch permanetly wiped out hundreds of thousands of gmail user's emails and a half a million google accounts were compromised on Sunday (2/27). One gmail user said "Google support help please! I cannot access my account, there is really valuable information there for me, this account has been my principal account for 4 years, I am really afraid to think about how much data I lost." The reason I felt this was relevant was because I think this article raises a big questions.
Are we so reliant on technology that we cannot function without it?
Is cloud computing as wonderful as we are led to believe?
What do you do to back up your accounts?
Yes I believe we are so reliant on technology that we are lost if it goes down. For example before cell phones became big Iused to remember everyones phone numbers in my head. Now I need to look at my cell phone just to remember my own family members numbers.
ReplyDeleteCloud computing is wonderful however we also have to realize that with technology there are downtimes and so many ways to get hacked into or get viruses.
At my workplace(St. Dominics Home) we have our mail going through a 3rd party before it is sent to our outlook mail. Well one day last year their server that held all our info crashed and for a whole day we were unable to send or recieve emails. This goes to show you that nothing is totally secure and you should backup all info on a USB stick or external harddrive.
OMG, YES we are so reliant on technology it is disgusting. We do our Banking online! I know a guy who does not do banking online, not even direct deposit. He takes everything to the bank and writes down all of his numbers. He could tell u to the exact penny what is in every single account! To me that seems crazy but in reality it is not crazy at all! It just goes to show how much we rely on technology! Now what happens if all the computer systems crash and there is not tracking of our money! There would be a HUGE problem. Similar to gmail crashing, we have important e-mails or documents/presentations saved and with a blink of an eye its GONE! Everything needs to be backed up on USB's or even an external hard drive! No other way to be sure your stuff is safe!
ReplyDeleteWe are extremely reliant on technology. In a sense it can be good if we're backing up files and whatnot. However, something such as cloud computing, i.e. Gmail, that is a huge problem. How can we back up our email accounts other than if we were to save every email to an external hard drive. I think Coach makes a great point about banking online. We have all of our money and information out on the web. Could we lose it all that way? Maybe, maybe not, but do we realize the risk we are taking by becoming so reliant on technology? I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteWe always joke in my house about what we will do "when the breakdown comes". I am not ready to put cash under my mattress but I think we have to understand that unless we back things up externally, cloud computing will have glitches. While professionally it has become important to save email communications, I don't think it would be the end of the world if I lost my emails. With the advent of Google Docs, and sites like Prezi, however, the concern about losing important information, not to mention lots of hard work, is very valid.
