- We keep hearing the argument about engaging students with the technologies they use outside of school. Do you think this is a good idea?
- Are these types of technologies better suited for use with students who are high academic achievers or students who are struggling or both? Why?

Student Engagement on the Go
http://thejournal.com/articles/2011/03/02/student-engagement-on-the-go.aspx An assistant principal in Florida played a video of his 3-year old daughter using an iPad for the 1st time. She found, launched and began to use a Dr. Seuss app without any adult assistance. He used the example at an Ed Tech convention to advocate the use of iPads and iPod touches in schools. He argues that student engagement is key to the learning process, especially with at-risk students. He closed his session showing a video produced by high school students using various audio, video and graphics apps on iPods.

I think students having the ability to use these technologies in and out of school is wonderful! I think something like an iPod or iPad is a great tool for students and teachers to use to engage their learners. I think they can be used across the board for advanced and struggling learners. The greatest part is that having an "iPAD or iPOD is cool" There is no knowing who is doing what on it except the student and the teacher. This is a great way to motivate students in the learning environment!
ReplyDeleteI think that more studies have to be done with them before we know for sure if this kind of education works. However I think it could be a great tool for all kinds of learners. I have a problem with the distractions that go along with using this kind of technology, but I really love the idea of the potential this kind technology has. Things such as enlarging print for visually impared students and apps for students with autism are things that can really improve their educational experience!
ReplyDeleteI would love to have a class set of iPads within my classroom, but sometimes I think that it may inhibit classroom instruction. If you give these students an iPad you are putting them on the internet speedway and allowing them to access everything. This is also why I think it is important for the students to take notes traditionally in a notebook. I love modern technology but i think that it may need to be slowed in some area.
ReplyDeletePlus what is this going to do to the current young generation that is learning their ABC's from the iPad? (sorry Polizzi)
I think it is a great idea if used correctly. As Alanna says, maybe we need to do more studies to see if it works. However, using teaching tools such as these may lead to different kinds of assessment. Therefore, maybe we need to change assessment tools along with teaching methods. Furthermore, I think these are equally suited for all learners because with these tools you can cater to any student of any learning style, which is what I think is one of the great aspects of using iPads and iPods in the classroom. You can challenge students more or less depending on what they're capable of. Also, I am not an expert, but I'm sure you can do so in a way so that you may not embarrass one student by not challenging them as much or challenging too much.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a really great idea because students these days are more receptive to new technology and if encorporated properly and effectively , I think they will learn more and become more interested in learning.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to say if it will be benificial for the high achievers or the ones struggling, but you can bet that everyone has at least tried or seen these new technologies and if given a chance to use it at school and home, that might make the difference between a C student and a B or A student.
