Students Protest Passing Of Education Reform

http://www.localnews8.com/news/27168941/detail.html

It is great to finally see students fighting for education reform but I never thought I would see the day. Students organized a walk out of school using technology but they DO NOT want technology to replace their teachers in the classroom. Students are against the idea that technology will eliminate teachers because many students are hands on learners and feel that working primarily on the computer will hinder their education. One student even agreed that the teachers should not be paid based on how their students perform because "some students just choose not to learn, you can't control it". Looks like we are teaching these kids something after all!

Do you think it was right for the students to voice their opinion in this way?
Do they have a valid point?
How can education be changed without the students on board?

  1. I think the students voice is extremely important. I think they are correct when they say teachers shouldn't be paid based on how students perform. Some students just choose to not learn and no matter how hard you try to engage them with interest or whatever else. They have a valid point and they need to be listened too. Education can't be changed without students because teachers are paid to inspire students and if they aren't inspiring the students they aren't doing their job.

  2. When they do things like this it is really meaningful and they are trying to take control of their lives. The only problem is when they do something like this and its not for a situation we agree with. Good for them, but there has to be some control or talk about when and where this idea is appropriate. I do think the students have a valid point and if I were one of their parents, I would be proud that my child stood up for their own education.

I think it was right for the students to voice their concerns and they did have a valid point. Technology has to be incorporated into the teaching system, it can not replace the teaching system. Technology needs to be adapted into education but if students are not on board who will learn the technology. Technology if used effectivly can help students at a higher level if thought properly.

  4. How 1960s of the kids to stage a walkout! When I read the article, I noticed the first comment under the article was by some guy saying the evil teachers probably put the kids up to it and that teachers are the biggest bunch of whiners! As we've talked about, this is the prevailing attitude these days and I think it is important for the students to speak up about the fact that they need teachers. They brought out one of the most basic reasons to not go to online learning - different learning styles.

  5. Education can be changed if and only if the students are on board. After every lesson I have ever taught, I have asked for student feedback. What did they like about it? What didn't they like about it? Student response is imperative to developing effective teaching methods. With regards to technology, it should be used as a supplemental tool to teaching. It should not replace it. I think it is excellent that students voiced their opinion and even better that they realized the value of their teachers.
